FAMILY LITERACY
READ ALOUD PROGRAM

The Anne Arundel County Economic Opportunity Committee, Inc. Head Start Family Literacy Read Aloud Program designed its mission from the "National Family Literacy Service of the Head Start Act" and the "Barbara Bush Foundation: Reading Is Fundamental"

The Agency's Family Literacy Read Aloud Program has six (6) functional components through which its program objectives are met. Those components include:

1. Non-literate Parents: Adult Basic Education and GED Referrals

II. Literate Parents: Read Aloud Program Parent Presentation

III. Family Literacy: Book Buddy Activities for Parent and Child

IV. Parent Education Support Groups: Peer interactions while attending child development/nurturing sessions

V. Community Involvement: Community Partners and Agency participation as "guest readers" in the classrooms

VI. Literacy Award Recognition Events: Program and Center Level Recognition Activities for Parent Involvement

Parents are encouraged to read to their child. Reading Aloud to children builds the knowledge for eventual success. Reading increases listening skills, helps children to learn new words, develops language skills, shows them reading is fun, and helps them to get ready to learn to read.

Guest readers (Parents, relatives, community officials and Professionals, are welcome to participate in our Read Aloud Program)
