VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the extra set of hands and helpers for the children. Head Start recognizes the parent as the child's first and most important teacher. We offer families the unique opportunity to play an important role in the education of their children by volunteering in the program.

We need parent volunteers everyday. SIGN UP FOR A VOLUNTEER DAY IN YOUR CHILD'S CENTER.

Remember, when you are assisting in the classroom, you are a part of the staff. Children will think of you as one of their teachers.

At a minimum, parents are encouraged to volunteer twelve hours per month, in some way, and to make regular observation visits to their child's classroom.

DRESS CODE FOR VOLUNTEERS
Dress should reflect the volunteer's position combined with the agency's philosophy of providing a positive learning environment for children.

Volunteers should dress to depict respect for oneself and the agency. Dress comfortably to allow flexibility to perform required duties.

VOLUNTEER TRAINING
In the beginning of the school year, there will be a volunteer training for any parents interested in becoming a Head Start volunteer. Training will be provided for classroom volunteers as well as for those who would like to assist tin the kitchen, on the buses, with clothing and food campaigns and for those serving on the Health Advisory Committee and the Transition Advisory Committee. Former Head Start parents who are experienced volunteers may serve as volunteer mentors to new volunteers.

Schedule your volunteer days. It is always easier if you set up a schedule to let us know what days are best for you to volunteer. The staff will guide you in the beginning, this is the time to ask lots of questions! Teachers may, for example, ask you to play a game with a small group of children, read a story to a child who needs individual attention, or to play in one of the classroom areas. All jobs are important and we hope you enjoy your time spent with the children in the classroom. Remember, mothers and fathers, as well as grandparents, are always welcome at Head Start.

Smoking is prohibited in and around all Anne Arundel County Head Start sites.
