The Community Action Agency
is governed by a board of directors consisting of representatives of the low-income community, elected local public officials, and leaders from the public and private non-profit sector. This unique trilateral board structure is fundamental to the Community Action concept. It empowers low-income people to participate directly in the development of responses to poverty conditions.
At the same time, our private and public representatives gain a more direct knowledge of the issues confronting low-income people in our community. Community Action Agencies strive for
“maximum feasible participation”
through their inclusive board structure, and by hiring low-income people as staff, thus creating community leadership opportunities.
